About

Nicola Moore in her Pasadena studio

Nicola Moore is an Australian ceramic artist and educator based out of her sunny backyard studio in Pasadena, California, making and teaching glaze magic and alternative firing.

Her work is a vibrant, eclectic body of unique ceramic art, built around masterful, experimental glaze work, and atmospheric firing processes. Above all she is currently focused on in-glaze reduction luster, the rare iridescent glaze surfaces she has become known for. She thrives on spontaneity, color, and the constant evolution of an experimental process that has seen her work published and exhibited.

Born in South Africa and raised in New Zealand and Australia, Nicola came to clay after a life of creative exploration through motion graphics, abstract painting, and acrylic pouring, and holds a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communications. Now, through a consciously intuitive workflow, she draws on that global pool of inspiration to create ceramic pieces that are an authentic and colorful expression of who she is.

Alongside her studio practice, Nicola helps other makers on their own creative path. Her book, Finding Your Voice in Glaze, is out now, and she teaches online through her How to Fire Pottery in a Microwave course, with a comprehensive glaze application course on the way. She shares her work, alternative firing processes, and her endless experiments, with a large community on Instagram.
